A 61-year-old man was allegedly murdered by his younger brother over a land dispute in the East Christian Para area under Chapra Police Station in Nadia district. The deceased, identified as Manoj Mondal, was found floating in a pond a short distance from his house on Tuesday morning, sending shockwaves through the locality.
According to local sources, villagers first spotted the body in the pond and alerted the police. Officers from Chapra Police Station reached the scene, recovered the body and sent it to Chapra Rural Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The discovery has intensified tensions in the area.
Family members of the deceased have alleged that a long-standing dispute over land and property had been brewing within the family. They claimed that on Monday night, Manoj Mondal’s younger brother called him out of the house on some pretext. It is alleged that he, along with his sons, assaulted Manoj, killed him and dumped the body in the pond in an attempt to destroy evidence. A written complaint has been lodged against the brother and nephews, and police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
