A 14-year-old boy allegedly died by suicide at his residence in Bangshree Colony on Sultan Alam Road in Tollygunge under Charu Market Police Station limits, triggering concern over rising mobile gaming addiction among teenagers. The incident occurred on Monday night, when the Class IX student was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room. Family members rushed him to M.R. Bangur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
According to preliminary police findings, the teenager had been spending long hours playing online games and had gradually lost interest in his studies. This reportedly led to frequent tensions at home. On the night of the incident, he was allegedly upset after being scolded by his parents over academic performance. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated an investigation.
As part of the probe, the boy’s mobile phone has been sent for forensic examination to determine whether he was engaged in any potentially harmful online gaming activities or digital tasks. Investigators are examining his recent online interactions and game history to establish whether any external factors may have influenced his actions.
The tragedy has reignited concerns about excessive screen time and academic pressure among adolescents. Mental health experts caution that prolonged gaming, social withdrawal, irritability and declining academic focus can signal deeper emotional distress. They urge parents to maintain open communication, monitor digital exposure and seek timely counselling support when behavioural changes become evident.
