A 60-year-old former Navy officer was seriously injured after being attacked with a sharp weapon at the Mohanpur intersection along the Barrackpore-Kalyani Expressway. The incident occurred when the victim, identified as Dipankar Sarkar, had stopped at a roadside shop to buy meat.
According to local sources, while Sarkar was purchasing meat, a 25-year-old man, later identified as Shyam Paswan, suddenly approached him. Before Sarkar could react, the accused allegedly thrust a chopper into his stomach, causing severe injuries and panic in the area.
The injured former officer was immediately rushed to a private nursing home in Barrackpore for emergency treatment. As his condition worsened, he was later shifted to the Base Hospital in Barrackpore for advanced medical care. Police from Mohanpur police station reached the spot soon after the incident and launched an investigation. The accused was arrested shortly after the attack, and further legal proceedings are currently underway.
