16 identified through DNA in Narendrapur warehouse fire; 5 reports awaited

The identities of victims from the Narendrapur warehouse fire in Nazirabad, Kolkata, are gradually being confirmed through DNA testing. Officials informed that 16 of the 21 missing workers from Purba Medinipur district have been identified so far, bringing closure to many grieving families. The administration has asked families to complete legal formalities before the remains are handed over.

The fire broke out on the night of January 25, engulfing a warehouse and claiming the lives of 21 workers. Following the incident, several people were reported missing, and families had held onto hope that their relatives might have survived or been admitted to hospitals. As days passed without news, anxiety and despair grew among relatives.

DNA samples were collected from the families across multiple blocks, including Tamluk, Panskura, Moyna, Nandakumar, Sutahata, and Shahid Matangini. Once the DNA matches were confirmed, families were informed by phone and asked to visit local police stations for further procedures. Many households were plunged into mourning upon receiving the news.

District Magistrate Younis Rishin Ismail stated that the identification process is ongoing, and efforts are being made to complete DNA verification for the remaining five missing individuals. Authorities assured that once all legal formalities are completed, the remains will be returned to their respective families.

Police sources added that the administration is intensifying its efforts to expedite the remaining reports, aiming to provide timely closure to the families still awaiting confirmation. The tragedy has left a lasting impact on the community, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in industrial facilities.
