19-year-old student critical after man pours sanitiser on live-in partner, sets her ablaze in Gurugram

A 19-year-old biotechnology student from Tripura is battling critical injuries at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi after her live-in partner allegedly poured sanitiser on her private parts and set them on fire in Gurugram. Police have arrested the accused, identified as Shivam (19), and registered an FIR under multiple serious sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to assault, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation and sexual intercourse under false promise of marriage.

The incident occurred in the Badshahpur police station area of Gurugram, where the survivor had been living in Sector 69 while pursuing her studies. According to her statement, she met the accused through an online app in September 2025. Their relationship developed over time, and they began living together. She alleged that he established physical relations with her under the pretext of marriage and later subjected her to repeated physical violence.

In her complaint, the survivor stated that the assault escalated on February 16 following an argument over marriage plans. She alleged that the accused struck her head with a metal bottle, smashed her against walls and furniture, attacked her legs with a knife and attempted to set her private parts on fire after pouring sanitiser. She further alleged that he recorded explicit videos of her during the abuse.

On the night of February 18, the victim managed to contact her mother using the accused’s phone and informed her about the ordeal. Her mother alerted emergency services, following which police reached the spot and admitted the survivor to a government hospital in Gurugram. She was later referred to AIIMS and subsequently shifted to Safdarjung Hospital due to the severity of her injuries. After doctors declared her fit, her detailed statement was recorded.

Police said the accused has been arrested and sent to judicial custody. An FIR has been registered under Sections 115(2), 118(1), 127(2), 69 and 351(2) of the BNS. Further investigation is underway, and additional charges may be considered based on medical findings. The case has sparked widespread outrage over the brutal assault.
