T20 World Cup: India register their first loss in this series as South Africa get a clean 76 run victory

South Africa delivered a commanding performance to defeat India by 76 runs in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 fixture at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Proteas put up a competitive total that ultimately proved too strong for the visitors.

South Africa posted 187/7 in their 20 overs, powered by key contributions from their middle order. David Miller scored 63 off 35 balls with seven fours and three sixes, while Dewald Brevis added 45 off 29 to steady the innings after early wickets. Tristan Stubbs also made an impactful 44 not out off 24 balls, helping South Africa push beyond the 180-run mark. Early dismissals of Aiden Markram (4) and Quinton de Kock (6) tested the Proteas before the middle order revived the innings. In reply, India’s chase faltered as the batting lineup struggled against disciplined South African bowling. Lack of partnerships saw India collapse under pressure, eventually being dismissed for 111, well short of the target. Indian batters were unable to build sustained innings, with early setbacks denting their momentum. Notable among India’s dismissals was opener Ishan Kishan, who was out for a duck in the first over, and was followed by Tilak Verma and Abhishek Sharma, compounding their troubles.

South Africa’s bowlers played a major role in choking the Indian chase. Jasprit Bumrah was among the wickets for South Africa with key strikes early, while the Proteas’ disciplined attack ensured India never recovered. The comprehensive win boosts South Africa’s Super 8 campaign profile and serves as a reality check for India as the tournament progresses.
