India marked a historic moment at the BAFTA Awards as Boong became the first Indian film to win in the Best Children’s and Family Film category. The Manipuri-language debut feature emerged as the sole Indian nominee this year and secured the prestigious honour, underlining India’s growing presence on the global cinema stage.
Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, the film is produced by Farhan Akhtar along with Vikesh Bhutani, Alan McAlex, Ritesh Sidhwani and Shujaat Saudagar. The film stars Gugun Kipgen and Bala Hijam, with Farhan Akhtar present at the ceremony to receive the award on behalf of the team.
Boong competed against international titles such as Arco, Lilo & Stitch and Zootopia 2 before claiming the top prize. The film previously premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival in the Discovery section and was later screened at several major global festivals, further strengthening its international recognition.
Set in the valley of Manipur, the film follows a young boy named Boong who wishes to surprise his mother with what he believes is the greatest gift of all — bringing his father back home. His innocent search turns into a journey that ultimately leads to an unexpected new beginning, forming the emotional core of the award-winning story.
