Underground cables struck triggering explosion and fire at South Kolkata's Lake Avenue

Panic swept through South Kolkata’s Lake Avenue on Tuesday morning after a loud explosion and fire broke out during road repair work. The incident occurred when a payloader engaged in digging operations struck an underground electric cable, causing it to snap and trigger a short circuit. Thick smoke and flames erupted from the ground, sending residents and passersby running for safety.

According to eyewitnesses, municipal road work had been underway since early morning when the heavy machinery accidentally hit the buried cable. Within moments, a loud blast was heard, followed by fire shooting up from the excavation site. Police quickly cordoned off the affected stretch to prevent further risk, while a fire engine rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The damaged machinery was moved aside and the repair work was temporarily halted.

Local residents have alleged negligence, claiming that proper checks and mapping of underground utilities were not carried out before digging began. They said the concerned authorities should have been aware of the presence of electric cables beneath the road. Officials from CESC Limited reached the site to assess the damage and restore electricity supply. While the situation is now under control, tension continues to linger in the area.
