Factional tensions within the Bharatiya Janata Party have surfaced again in West Bengal ahead of the Assembly elections, this time in the Barrackpore organisational district. A video allegedly showing the assault of former district president and coordinator of Barrackpore and four other districts, Sandeep Banerjee, inside a party office has gone viral on social media. However, the authenticity of the video has not been independently verified.
According to party sources, the dispute reportedly stemmed from longstanding disagreements over the use of party funds in the Barrackpore unit. What began as a heated argument allegedly escalated into physical violence. In the viral clip, Banerjee is purportedly seen lying unconscious inside the office premises, while several workers appear to be involved in a scuffle.
The incident is said to have led to tension within the party office for some time before internal discussions were initiated to defuse the situation. The matter gained wider attention after the video surfaced publicly, triggering political reactions and speculation about internal rifts. Local party leaders have declined to issue an official statement so far.
Allegations have been made that supporters of Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh were involved in the incident. Responding to the claims, Singh said on Friday morning that he had no knowledge of the episode and denied any connection to it. He stated that he would speak to party workers to gather more details, while district sources indicated that the matter would be investigated and appropriate action taken if necessary.
