Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described the escalating conflict in West Asia as a “matter of grave concern for us” and assured that India is working to ensure the safety of its citizens in the region. Speaking at a joint press conference, he reiterated that India supports the resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy and emphasised the need for de-escalation.
“We will keep working with countries in West Asia to ensure safety of Indians there,” the Prime Minister said, underlining that India has consistently advocated peace and stability amid global tensions. He added that when democracies stand together, the call for peace becomes stronger.
The remarks came after the Prime Minister chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security to review the evolving situation following the recent escalation involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The high-level meeting focused on strategic developments and the safety of the large Indian expatriate community living across the Gulf region.
Following the meeting, Modi held telephonic conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. In his discussions, he pressed for an early cessation of hostilities and strongly condemned attacks on the UAE, expressing solidarity and condoling the loss of lives.
An official statement said the Cabinet Committee on Security directed all concerned departments to take necessary measures to assist Indian nationals affected by the developments. It expressed serious concern over the safety and security of Indians in the region as the situation continues to remain volatile.
