Oleum gas leak at chemical unit in Maharashtra, 458 evacuated

Oleum (fuming sulphuric acid) gas leaked from a chemical unit in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on Monday afternoon, prompting authorities to evacuate 458 persons as a precautionary measure. The incident occurred around 2 pm at the Bhageria Chemicals Company, formerly known as Zenith Chemicals, located in the MIDC D-Zone industrial area near Salwad and Pasthal villages. Some individuals reported minor eye irritation, and three persons were hospitalised, officials said.

According to the district administration, emergency services including the fire brigade, police and disaster management teams rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information about the leak. Residents in nearby areas were alerted through social media and other communication channels and were advised to follow safety protocols.

A total of 458 persons were evacuated from the premises of the unit to prevent exposure. One person was admitted to the Rural Hospital in Boisar, while two others were taken to private hospitals. Doctors said their condition is stable. Authorities confirmed that the emergency response team has identified the source of the leak and efforts are underway to plug it.

Officials stated that the situation is currently under control. However, as a precaution, residents have been advised to stay away from the affected site and cover their nose and mouth with a wet cloth or mask. People have also been instructed to use protective gear such as gloves and goggles if available.

The administration further directed that in case of contact with the gas, affected skin or eyes should be washed with clean water for at least 15 to 20 minutes, followed by medical consultation. Residents were warned against approaching the leak site, touching the chemical, or pouring water directly on the source as it could intensify the fumes. Authorities have urged the public not to panic and to refrain from spreading rumours.
