Portion of 150-years-old building collapses in Park Street, local blames earthquake

A portion of a 150-year-old building on Park Street collapsed on Tuesday morning. Fortunately, there was no significant tragedy as the residents were away and the streets were less crowded than usual. Locals were startled by a loud thud as a section of the roof gave way, prompting an immediate response from the Park Street police station.

Panic gripped the neighborhood as dust and debris filled the air, but emergency teams confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries. Witnesses and neighbors believe the structural integrity of the ancient house was severely compromised by the strong earthquake that jolted Kolkata on February 27.

The lack of regular maintenance and renovation over the decades had already left the building in a precarious state, making it unable to withstand the seismic after-effects. This collapse follows a similar concerning incident at the Central Park Metro station in Salt Lake, where a concrete slab recently fell.
