'Hindu-Hindu bhai-bhai' slogan heats up Bhawanipur as Suvendu targets Mamata’s stronghold

The political temperature soared in Bhawanipur on Tuesday as Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari raised the controversial slogan 'Secularism should collapse' during a Holi procession, sharpening the battle in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s home turf. With Assembly elections approaching, the slogan has triggered sharp reactions and pushed the state’s political discourse towards deeper polarization.

Addressing a large gathering amid chants and devotional songs, Adhikari appeared firmly in campaign mode. He called for the protection of Hindu identity and security in West Bengal, raised the slogan “Hindu-Hindu bhai-bhai,” and launched a strong critique of atheism and the prevailing secular framework. His assertive positioning in Bhawanipur is being viewed as a direct challenge to the Trinamool Congress in what has long been considered Mamata Banerjee’s safest bastion.

The BJP’s growing activity in the constituency, including the opening of a new election office and Adhikari’s frequent visits, has intensified speculation about a high-voltage contest similar to Nandigram. While the party has not officially announced his candidature, his sustained presence in the area has put the ruling camp on the defensive and signalled an aggressive electoral push.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded with a pointed message wrapped in Holi greetings, invoking Bengal’s cultural heritage and the legacy of Shri Chaitanya Dev. She urged citizens to safeguard the state’s tradition of secularism and tolerance, a statement widely interpreted as a direct rebuttal to Adhikari’s rhetoric. As discussions around the deployment of central forces gain momentum ahead of the Election Commission’s full bench meeting, Bhawanipur’s developments suggest that identity and ideology may dominate the upcoming electoral battle.
