Iran on Thursday denied launching a drone attack on Azerbaijan after Baku claimed that two Iranian drones struck targets in the country’s Nakhichevan exclave, injuring two civilians and damaging infrastructure. Azerbaijan warned that the strikes would not go unanswered and said it was preparing retaliatory measures.
According to Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry, at least two drones crossed from Iran into Nakhichevan around midday. One drone reportedly hit the terminal building of Nakhichevan Airport, while another fell near a school in the village of Shekerabad. The incident left two civilians injured and caused damage to the airport facility.
Iran’s armed forces rejected the accusations in an official statement, saying the country had not launched any drone attack toward Azerbaijan. Iranian authorities instead blamed Israel, claiming that such actions by the “Zionist regime” aimed to create divisions between Muslim nations and destabilise regional relations.
Following the incident, Azerbaijan summoned the Iranian envoy in Baku to lodge a strong protest. The country’s foreign ministry said the alleged attack violated international law and contributed to rising tensions in the region.
Azerbaijan’s defence ministry stated that it was preparing necessary retaliatory measures to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and protect civilians and infrastructure, raising concerns about further escalation in an already volatile regional situation.
