Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty resigns, another massive blow to TMC
Kolkata's Dharmatala is witnessing traffic disruption today as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is launching a sit-in demonstration at the iconic Metro Channel. The protest is directed against the mass deletion of names from electoral rolls following the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
Due to the high-profile dharna, the road towards Chittaranjan (CR) Avenue from Dharmatala has been closed to traffic, leading to heavy congestion and diversions across central Kolkata. Vehicular movements are being done from the opposite plank (towards Park Street).
The timing of the Chief Minister's protest is strategically significant, occurring just 48 hours before a full bench of the Election Commission (ECI) is slated to arrive in Kolkata. Led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the ECI team will visit on Sunday to review West Bengal's preparedness for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections.
