Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar faced another round of intense protests. While on his way to offer prayers at the historic Kalighat Temple in south Kolkata, the CEC’s convoy was met with black flags and "Go Back" slogans from a group of agitated locals.
This marks the second consecutive day of demonstrations against the ECI full bench since their arrival in the city to review preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections. Last night, protesters gathered near the airport to protest the CEC.
The protesters, some of whom were reportedly linked to local groups aggrieved by the recent 'Special Intensive Revision' (SIR) of the electoral rolls, gathered at the temple entrance. As the CEC attempted to enter the premises, the situation became tense with protesters raising placards calling him a "murderer of democracy."
