Two youths were critically injured after one of them caught fire while holding petrol in the Jyoti Nagar area of New Town on Tuesday. The incident occurred when the young man, who had come to a local hotel to eat, was reportedly smoking a cigarette while carrying petrol, triggering a sudden blaze.
According to local sources, flames erupted suddenly, engulfing the youth. In a desperate attempt to save himself, he jumped into a nearby canal. Another young man who tried to rescue him also suffered severe burn injuries during the incident.
Police from New Town Police Station rushed to the spot, rescued the youth from the canal and sent both injured persons to a nearby hospital. Hospital sources said one of the youths remains in critical condition while receiving treatment.
