Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee presented a rare display of inter-party courtesy during the swearing-in ceremony of Governor R.N. Ravi on Thursday. Upon arriving at Lok Bhavan, the Chief Minister noticed Left Front Chairman Biman Basu seated in the third row, as per the official seating chart. Disregarding the formal protocol, she immediately insisted that the veteran leader move forward, showcasing a moment of personal respect that transcended political rivalry.
The seating arrangement had initially placed the Chief Minister and the Assembly Speaker in the front row, with the third row reserved for leaders of other political parties. Seeing the elderly Biman Basu at the back, Mamata Banerjee reportedly remarked, "Bimanda, why are you sitting behind? Come forward." She first moved him to the second row and later, noticing the seat reserved for the Mayor was vacant, insisted he sit beside her in the front row despite his initial hesitation.
Witnesses described the moment as deeply emotional, with the normally stoic Biman Basu visibly moved by the gesture. He reportedly thanked the Chief Minister in a trembling voice as she personally ensured his comfort. The interaction also extended to the new Governor’s family, as Mamata Banerjee spent time ensuring they felt at home in Kolkata.
