Howrah civic volunteer arrested after woman’s suicide over alleged harassment

A young woman in the Kanpur Matua village of Udaynarayanpur, Howrah, tragically ended her life by self-immolation after allegedly facing persistent harassment and social humiliation. The primary accused, Laltu Mukherjee, is a powerful Trinamool Congress (TMC) booth president who also served as a civic volunteer within the local police force. Reports indicate that the victim was in a state of deep trauma following a recent incident of molestation by the accused, eventually leading her to take the extreme step on Wednesday when the humiliation became unbearable.

The news of her death sparked massive unrest, turning the village into a virtual battlefield as enraged residents blocked authorities. When the Penro police arrived to take custody of the body for a post-mortem, they were met with slogans and a physical standoff, eventually being forced out of the village by the mob. Villagers expressed deep distrust, alleging that Mukherjee’s dual role as a political leader and a police affiliate allowed him to operate with impunity while the administration attempted to shield him from consequences.

Tensions remained high for hours as additional security forces were summoned to manage the escalating situation and retrieve the body. After a period of intense confrontation, the police successfully took custody of the deceased and subsequently arrested Laltu Mukherjee under several stringent sections of the law. Despite the arrest, a heavy police presence continues to monitor the area to prevent further violence, while the victim's family remains steadfast in their demand for the death penalty.

The incident has triggered a political firestorm, with opposition leaders accusing the ruling party of providing a haven for criminals. Critics argue that the political protection enjoyed by figures like Mukherjee undermines the rule of law and endangers local communities. As the investigation continues, the case stands as a grim reminder of the potential for power to be weaponized against the vulnerable, leaving a grieving family and a village demanding systemic accountability.
