‘Gas allocated to Bengal must not leave state’: CM Mamata orders strict monitoring

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday ordered strict administrative action to tackle the growing gas shortage in the state. During a high-level virtual meeting held at the state secretariat Nabanna, she instructed officials to ensure that the gas allocated to West Bengal remains within the state and is not diverted elsewhere.

Addressing district administrative officers, Superintendents of Police and senior officials from the supply department, the Chief Minister expressed concern over reports of illegal smuggling and black marketing of gas. She directed authorities to maintain strict round-the-clock monitoring of the supply chain to prevent diversion and ensure smooth distribution.

Banerjee also highlighted the difficulties faced by both domestic and commercial consumers due to the shortage. She instructed District Magistrates to conduct surprise inspections at gas distribution centres and warehouses to identify any hoarding or illegal storage that may be causing artificial scarcity in the market.

On the law-and-order front, the Chief Minister asked the police administration to remain vigilant and maintain a strong presence near distribution centres. She warned that any individual or agency found involved in illegal storage or sale of gas at inflated prices must face immediate legal action.

During the review meeting, Banerjee also directed officials to coordinate closely with gas companies and resolve logistical or technical issues affecting supply. She reiterated that administrative negligence would not be tolerated and said the state government’s priority is to ensure uninterrupted gas availability for households and businesses.
