BJP gherao 'New TMC' MLA Sandipan Saha's house in Entally, protest over 'cut money'
In a significant move just hours before the Election Commission’s announcement of the 2026 Assembly Election dates, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a financial boost for the state's spiritual leaders. The monthly honorarium for both Purohits (priests) and Muezzins has been increased by ₹500, bringing their total monthly stipend to ₹2,000. The Chief Minister emphasized that these individuals are the custodians of the state’s rich spiritual heritage and play a vital role in sustaining social harmony.
Beyond the salary hike, the State Government has also approved all fresh applications submitted by religious leaders that were previously pending. This mass clearance ensures that a larger number of spiritual practitioners across diverse communities will now be brought under the state's direct support umbrella. By addressing both the existing beneficiaries and new applicants, the government has aimed for a comprehensive outreach across religious lines.
The timing of this announcement has drawn significant attention, as it comes on the very afternoon the Model Code of Conduct is expected to kick in. Mamata Banerjee stated that her government takes pride in nurturing an environment where every tradition is valued. She reiterated that the revision is a mark of recognition and support for those who dedicatedly serve the spiritual and social life of the communities in West Bengal.
