TMC leader seriously injured in alleged BJP attack in Dinhata on night of poll announcement

Tension gripped Dinhata after a youth leader of the All India Trinamool Congress was seriously injured in an alleged attack late on Sunday, the same day the Election Commission of India announced the schedule for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. The injured leader, identified as Sayan Chakraborty, is currently undergoing treatment at the Dinhata Sub-Divisional Hospital.

According to Chakraborty, who serves as the Youth Trinamool president of Booth No. 277 under Village-2 Gram Panchayat in the area, the attack occurred while he was returning home on Sunday evening after completing personal work. He alleged that several individuals linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party intercepted him on the way and launched a violent assault.

The youth leader claimed that the attackers used sharp weapons, including a sword, and left him severely injured on the road. Locals later rescued him and rushed him to the hospital for treatment. In his statement, Chakraborty alleged that specific individuals were involved in the attack and accused them of attempting to kill him.

Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, however, rejected the allegations and denied any involvement in the incident. Meanwhile, police from the Dinhata Police Station have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The incident comes amid heightened political tensions after the Election Commission announced that polling in West Bengal will be conducted in two phases, on April 23 and April 29, with counting scheduled for May 4. The Commission has repeatedly emphasised the need for peaceful and violence-free elections, making the outbreak of violence on the very night of the announcement a matter of concern.
