A landslide triggered by rain killed one worker and injured others in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, while a large rescue operation evacuated more than 230 people stranded due to heavy snowfall in the region. The incident occurred near a hydropower project site close to Dangduru during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.
Officials said the landslide buried a vehicle at the project site, trapping two workers. Rescue teams managed to pull both out from the debris, but one of them succumbed to injuries while the other was taken to hospital for treatment. Authorities immediately launched emergency operations in the area following the incident.
In a separate weather-related situation, more than 230 people travelling in around 38 vehicles were stranded at the high-altitude Sinthan Top due to heavy snowfall and harsh weather conditions. A joint rescue effort involving the police, the Army and civil administration safely evacuated all 235 passengers, including women and children. Due to the continuing inclement weather, authorities ordered the closure of all educational institutions outside municipal limits in Kishtwar and neighbouring Doda district as a precautionary measure. Officials said the administration remains on alert as heavy snowfall and rain continue to affect several high-altitude areas of the region.
