Two workers were killed and several others seriously injured after a stone quarry collapsed in the Gopalpur area of Birbhum district on Monday. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Murarai Police Station when a section of the quarry suddenly caved in while workers were engaged in routine operations.
According to local information, around 12 to 14 labourers were working inside the quarry when soil and stones collapsed without warning, trapping many of them under the debris. With the help of residents from nearby areas, several workers were pulled out from the rubble. Police personnel rushed to the site soon after receiving information and the injured were immediately taken to hospital for treatment.
Administrative officials said that several of the rescued workers are in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll could increase. The quarry where the accident occurred is reportedly owned by Sirajul Islam, a functionary associated with the Birbhum Zilla Parishad.
The incident has also triggered political reactions. The Bharatiya Janata Party demanded the arrest of the quarry owner, alleging that the site was operating illegally despite the enforcement of the election code of conduct. Meanwhile, a leader of the All India Trinamool Congress said the party is currently gathering information about the incident while prioritising relief measures and monitoring the condition of the injured.
