UP man kills mother-in-law, brother-in-law during panchayat meeting , shot dead by cops

A violent family dispute in Bareilly turned deadly when Afsar Khan allegedly killed his mother-in-law and brother-in-law during a panchayat meeting and was later shot dead in a police encounter. The incident occurred during a gathering convened to resolve a domestic dispute, where Khan attacked his wife’s family members with a knife, leaving two dead and his wife critically injured.

According to police, Khan (40) stabbed his mother-in-law Asma (54) and brother-in-law Adil (20) to death during the meeting. His wife, Saima (28), who had recently returned to her maternal home following a dispute, was also attacked when she tried to intervene. She was rushed to a hospital and remains in critical condition. The couple had been married for nine years and have two children.

Following the killings, police launched a manhunt and tracked Khan to an area in Mudiya Ahmadnagar. Acting on a tip-off that he was armed and possibly planning another attack, police surrounded him and asked him to surrender. However, officials said Khan opened fire on the police team, prompting retaliatory action. He sustained critical injuries in the exchange and was declared dead at a hospital. Two constables were also injured during the encounter and are undergoing treatment.

Police said a pistol, ammunition and a knife were recovered from his possession. Officials further revealed that Khan had a criminal history, including a 2009 murder case in which he was sentenced to life imprisonment before securing bail. Additional cases, including theft, had also been registered against him, and further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
