A controversy has erupted in Kolkata after a video showing two schoolgirls performing a “towel dance” at a cultural event went viral, prompting intervention by the National Human Rights Commission. The commission has issued notices to multiple authorities, seeking a detailed report into the incident and the circumstances under which the performance was allowed.
The video shows two girls dancing to the song ‘Mere Khwabon Mein’ from the film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, recreating a popular scene featuring Kajol, where she appeared draped in a towel. The performance, held during a school cultural programme, quickly spread on social media and drew sharp reactions from users.
The incident triggered widespread criticism online, with many questioning the appropriateness of such performances in an educational setting. Several users described the act as “vulgar” and raised concerns about the kind of values being promoted within school premises, arguing that institutions should focus on cultural and educational enrichment.
Acting on a complaint, the rights body issued notices not only to the school authorities but also to the state administration, including the Principal Secretary of the School Education Department, the Commissioner of Police, and the District Magistrate. It has directed them to conduct an inquiry into the allegations and submit an Action Taken Report within two weeks.
The complaint alleged negligence and lack of proper supervision by school authorities, stating that such performances could adversely affect the dignity and well-being of children. It also called for the formulation of clear guidelines to prevent the “sexualised portrayal” of minor girls in school programmes and on digital platforms.
