At least seven people, including three children, were killed after a massive fire broke out in a multi-storey residential building in Delhi’s Palam area on Wednesday morning. The blaze triggered a large-scale rescue operation, with around 30 fire tenders rushed to the spot to control the flames and evacuate residents trapped inside.
According to officials, the fire was reported around 7 am from a building located near the Palam Metro area. Personnel from the Delhi Fire Service carried out rescue operations and shifted victims to nearby hospitals. Several individuals were declared dead on arrival, while others sustained serious burn injuries and remain under treatment.
Authorities confirmed that among the deceased were three minor girls, while multiple adults also lost their lives in the incident. At least 10 people were rescued from the building, with some suffering injuries after attempting to escape the flames, including individuals who reportedly jumped from upper floors.
Preliminary information suggests the building had multiple floors, with portions used for storage of goods such as clothes and cosmetics, while upper levels served as residential spaces. Officials said several people were feared trapped during the initial stages of the fire, prompting an intensive firefighting and search operation that continued for hours before the blaze was brought under control.
Reacting to the tragedy, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed grief and ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and authorities said further investigations are underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the deadly blaze.
