A massive fire broke out in a densely populated locality of Malda’s Manikchak block on Wednesday evening, triggering panic among residents and causing significant property damage. The incident occurred in the Mathurapur Bochahi area, where flammable materials had been stored in the open.
According to initial information, a large quantity of plastic and rubber materials caught fire, which rapidly spread and intensified within a short span of time. The flames, fanned by the highly combustible materials, raised fears of the fire engulfing nearby houses in the congested locality.
Residents immediately alerted the fire department, but as fire engines took time to arrive, locals stepped in and managed to partially control the blaze through their own efforts. The fire was eventually contained, averting a larger disaster, though property worth several lakhs of rupees was reportedly damaged.
