Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
A sanitation worker was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside a room at SSKM Hospital on Friday, triggering concern within the hospital premises. The body of Imran Sardar (22), a contractual worker in the Gastroenterology department, was discovered hanging from a room on the fourth floor of the outdoor building.
According to initial information, the room where the body was found had three patient beds but was empty at the time as outpatient services had not yet begun. The door was reportedly locked from the inside, and hospital staff had to break it open after noticing the situation. The body was then recovered from inside the room.
Police have begun an investigation into the incident and suspect it to be a case of suicide at the preliminary stage. However, the exact cause and circumstances leading to the death are yet to be established. The body has been sent for postmortem examination to determine further details.
The incident has added to growing concerns, coming on the same day as another tragic event at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a man died after suffering a heart attack while being trapped in a malfunctioning lift. Authorities are examining both incidents as questions are being raised over safety and infrastructure management in major public hospitals.
