Verbal clash in TMC meeting after Jadavpur candidate warns councillors over performance

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) camp in Jadavpur is facing a major internal crisis following a heated confrontation during a core committee meeting on Thursday. The trouble began when Debabrata Majumdar, the sitting MLA and re-nominated candidate for the Jadavpur seat, conveyed a stern message from the party’s All India General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee. Majumdar informed the local leadership that the performance of councillors in the upcoming assembly elections would directly determine their eligibility for tickets in the December 2026 Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections.

This "performance-linked" ultimatum triggered an immediate backlash from three prominent TMC councillors, including two women, at the party office in Sampui Para. The councillors reportedly felt insulted and mistrusted, shouting back at Majumdar that they would "see the end of it" before leaving. The atmosphere turned even more volatile when Majumdar allegedly mocked the dissenters, suggesting their anger stemmed from the fact that they had unsuccessfully submitted their CVs to replace him as the MLA candidate.

The argument escalated despite the presence of Jadavpur’s in-charge observer, Bappaditya Dasgupta. Dasgupta attempted to defend the party's stance by reminding the rebels that similar instructions had been given by Mayor Firhad Hakim in 2024 without any protest. He insisted that Abhishek Banerjee’s orders were final and must be followed by every member of the party. However, the three councillors remained defiant, issuing a warning that the "politics of threats" would not work in Jadavpur.
