"Won't tolerate this...": India condemns attack on ships in Hormuz Strait

India has strongly condemned the recent attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, calling such incidents unacceptable and urging restraint amid rising tensions in the region. Speaking at the 36th extraordinary session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council in London, India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Vikram Doraiswami, stressed the need to protect civilian vessels and ensure freedom of navigation in international waters. Doraiswami said attacks on commercial shipping and civilian maritime infrastructure pose serious risks to seafarers and disrupt global trade routes. Emphasising India’s position, he stated that targeting merchant vessels and threatening safe passage through international waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz violates international norms and must stop immediately. () India also expressed concern for the safety and welfare of seafarers, noting that the country is among the world’s largest suppliers of maritime workforce. The envoy highlighted that such attacks have already led to casualties and injuries among crew members and have heightened risks for ships navigating through the strategic Gulf route. ()
