Red Road to shut from 10 pm tonight for Eid prayers, police issue traffic restrictions

Ahead of Eid al-Fitr, Kolkata Police has issued a comprehensive traffic notification imposing restrictions and diversions across the city on March 21, subject to the sighting of the moon. The measures have been put in place to prevent congestion and ensure public safety during large congregational prayers.

As per the directive, movement of all goods vehicles—except those carrying essential commodities such as LPG, CNG, petroleum products, medicines, vegetables, fruits, fish, milk, and oxygen—will remain restricted within the city from 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Entry of goods vehicles into the Kolkata Dock System will also be prohibited during the same hours.

A major highlight of the advisory is the complete closure of Red Road for all vehicular traffic from 10:00 PM on March 20 until 12:00 PM on March 21 or until the end of the programme. In addition, vehicular movement, including tram services, will be suspended or diverted across multiple key roads between 4:00 AM and 12:00 PM, depending on real-time instructions from traffic personnel on duty.
