Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, extending Eid and Nowruz greetings while expressing hope that the festive period brings peace and stability to West Asia. The conversation came amid heightened regional tensions and continued disruption of maritime movement in the region.
During the call, the Prime Minister condemned recent attacks on critical infrastructure, noting that such actions endanger regional security and threaten global supply chains. He stressed the need to ensure secure and uninterrupted shipping lanes, reiterating that freedom of navigation is essential for global economic stability. Modi also appreciated Iran’s support in ensuring the safety of Indian nationals currently in the country.
This was the second telephonic conversation between the two leaders since the conflict began on February 28. Earlier this month, President Pezeshkian had briefed Modi on the evolving situation, prompting the Prime Minister to highlight India’s position that regional issues must be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy.
The ongoing conflict has intensified concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial energy corridor controlled by Iran, through which nearly 20 per cent of the world’s energy supply passes. With limited vessels allowed to cross since hostilities began, India has remained in close contact with multiple global leaders to address maritime and security challenges.
