"Kolkata to get Water Metro connectivity," says Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari
Tensions escalated in Baranagar on Saturday as a violent clash broke out between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Gopal Lal Thakur Road. The dispute reportedly began over the putting up of posters for TMC candidate Sayantika Banerjee. The situation quickly spiraled into a heated confrontation between the rival groups, leading to a complete standstill of traffic in the area and the immediate deployment of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) to restore order.
BJP candidate Sajal Ghosh was seen leading a protest, using a megaphone to chant slogans against his opponent. Protesters shouted "Sayantika Go Back" and "Chor MLA Go Back," as supporters from both sides engaged in a physical scuffle. The confrontation occurred ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, highlighting the intense political rivalry in the constituency.
Upon hearing the news, TMC candidate Sayantika Banerjee rushed to the spot and leveled serious allegations against the BJP. She claimed that the BJP had brought in "outsiders" armed with hockey sticks who physically assaulted female TMC workers. Banerjee condemned the incident, stating that such violence is part of the "BJP culture" and an attempt to disturb the peace in Baranagar.
