“Give an hour for Earth”: India Gate lights off tonight for global Earth Hour campaign

India Gate will go dark on Saturday between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm as part of Earth Hour 2026, a worldwide initiative aimed at raising awareness about climate change and environmental sustainability. The symbolic switch-off is part of a global movement encouraging individuals, institutions, and landmarks to turn off non-essential lights for one hour.

This year’s observance is particularly significant as it marks the 20th anniversary of Earth Hour, with the theme “Give an Hour for Earth,” highlighting the importance of collective action. The campaign, organised by World Wide Fund for Nature, began in 2007 in Sydney and has since evolved into one of the largest grassroots environmental movements, spanning over 190 countries and territories.

Authorities across India have urged citizens to participate actively by switching off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances during the designated hour. The initiative aims to go beyond symbolic action by encouraging people to reflect on their energy consumption and adopt sustainable practices in daily life.

Major cities and civic bodies have also joined the campaign, appealing to residents to contribute to environmental conservation efforts. Officials emphasised that even small individual actions, when multiplied across communities, can lead to meaningful impact in addressing climate change and preserving natural resources.

Prominent landmarks across the country, including Rashtrapati Bhavan and other national monuments, have participated in similar observances in previous years. The continued participation of iconic sites like India Gate underscores the growing cultural and environmental significance of Earth Hour, reinforcing the message of shared responsibility towards protecting the planet.
