Five government school teachers from Bihar were arrested on Friday at the Indo-Nepal border in Supaul for allegedly being under the influence of alcohol while accompanying students on an educational tour. The arrests were made during routine security checks at the Bhimnagar checkpost as the group was returning from Nepal, raising serious concerns about conduct during a state-sponsored programme.
According to officials, the teachers were part of a student tour organised under the Chief Minister’s ‘Bihar Darshan’ scheme. During the inspection, security personnel conducted breath-analyser tests on individuals crossing the checkpoint, and all five teachers tested positive for alcohol consumption. The act is considered a serious violation, particularly given Bihar’s strict prohibition laws banning the consumption, sale, and transportation of liquor.
Police identified the accused teachers as Shivansh Kumar, Deepnarayan Ram, English Kumar, Dhirendra Kumar, and Mithu Kumar. Following their arrest, legal formalities were completed, and the individuals were sent to judicial custody. Authorities have also informed the Education Department for further departmental action against the accused.
The incident has triggered strong reactions among local residents, who expressed concern over the behaviour of teachers responsible for supervising students. Many described the act as irresponsible and inappropriate, especially in the context of an official educational tour involving minors.
Meanwhile, district authorities confirmed that the suspension process has been initiated against the accused teachers. Officials said further action will depend on the outcome of both the legal proceedings and departmental inquiry, as the case continues to draw attention to enforcement of prohibition laws and accountability in public service.
