Tensions escalated in Kaliachak Block 1 of Malda district on Wednesday as protests broke out over allegations of large-scale exclusion of names from the voter list. Demonstrations, including road blockades, were reported from multiple areas, with political workers and residents raising concerns about the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The unrest intensified after claims that thousands of legitimate voters were either removed from the rolls or their applications remain pending ahead of the elections.
Amid the growing agitation, Trinamool Congress candidate from Sujapur and minister Sabina Yasmin staged a sit-in protest in front of the BDO office, joined by party leaders and supporters. Raising the slogan “First voters, then voting,” she alleged that valid voters’ names have been unfairly deleted across several booths in her constituency. She further claimed that the party has been protesting against the issue since the beginning of the SIR process, while also questioning the role of the Election Commission in addressing the grievances.
