Clash over road construction in Birbhum’s Suri turns violent; police injured, 14 arrested

A violent clash broke out in Suri of Birbhum district following tensions over a road construction project in Kankuria village. The situation escalated when a dispute between local villagers and a construction company reportedly turned into a confrontation. According to police sources, the dispute had been brewing for some time due to a land-related disagreement linked to the road construction. Despite the tension, the construction company reportedly resumed work using a JCB machine, which sparked fresh protests from a section of villagers.  Bricks and stones were allegedly hurled during the unrest, leading to injuries and damage to police vehicles.

Upon receiving information, a police team led by Suri police station IC Shailend Upadhyay reached the spot to control the situation. However, officials alleged that some villagers began pelting bricks and stones at the police force. Several police vehicles were reportedly vandalised during the attack, and multiple police personnel sustained serious injuries. The officer-in-charge was also severely injured and was immediately taken to Suri Sadar Hospital for treatment.

Following the violence, a large number of police personnel along with central forces were deployed in the area to restore order. Two companies of forces were sent to the spot to control the situation. A senior police official confirmed that 14 people have been arrested in connection with the incident, including women, and stated that strict disciplinary action will be taken against those involved in the attack.
