Kolkata witnessed heightened tension during the nomination process for the upcoming Assembly elections, prompting the Election Commission to convene an emergency meeting to address the situation. Incidents of unrest and clashes between supporters of rival political parties at multiple nomination centres on Thursday raised serious concerns over the smooth conduct of the electoral process.
In response, the state’s Chief Electoral Officer, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, has called for an urgent meeting with the Returning Officers of North and South Kolkata. The meeting, scheduled for Friday afternoon, aims to assess the ground situation and formulate measures to ensure that the nomination process proceeds in a peaceful and orderly manner.
Over the past two days, an unusually large turnout of party workers and supporters was observed at various nomination centres across the city. In several instances, the crowding led to heated confrontations, with some locations witnessing direct clashes. Despite efforts by the local administration and police to manage the situation, the developments have sparked concerns about law and order during a crucial phase of the election process.
Officials indicated that the review meeting will focus on identifying lapses and strengthening security arrangements at sensitive locations. The Election Commission has signalled its intent to take additional measures if required, underscoring the importance of maintaining neutrality, discipline, and safety during the nomination period.
