At least 26 schoolchildren reported breathing difficulties after inhaling smoke from burning dry leaves and garbage near Greenland Public School in Tamkuhiraj tehsil, officials said on Friday. The incident caused panic among students and staff, prompting immediate medical attention. The smoke, originating from an adjacent plot, reportedly intensified and spread into the school premises, affecting multiple children.
All 26 children were initially taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Sevarhi, where they received primary treatment. Health officials monitored their condition and discharged them once their symptoms subsided. As a precautionary measure, 11 children were referred to Kushinagar Medical College for further observation. Doctors confirmed that all were stable and subsequently discharged.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Akanksha Mishra supervised the arrangements at the CHC, while District Magistrate Mahendra Singh Tanwar, Superintendent of Police Keshav Kumar, and health department officials visited the school, CHC, and medical college to assess the situation. Authorities stated that the situation was fully under control, with no further health concerns reported among the students.
Officials warned about the hazards of burning dry waste near public spaces, emphasizing that such practices can pose serious health risks. The administration has urged local residents and institutions to take precautions and maintain proper waste disposal practices to prevent similar incidents in the future.
