Fire breaks out on ONGC's Mumbai High SHP platform, 10 personnel injured

Ten personnel sustained minor injuries after a fire broke out on the SHP Platform of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) at its Mumbai High Asset on Friday. The incident occurred at approximately 17:45 hours, causing immediate concern among the offshore workforce and prompting activation of emergency protocols.

ONGC confirmed that the fire was promptly brought under control and extinguished by the company’s dedicated emergency response teams. All injured personnel were immediately provided medical care and are currently reported to be in stable condition. Operations at the platform have since been normalised, ensuring continued production without significant disruption.

The Mumbai High Asset, located in the Arabian Sea off Mumbai, is one of ONGC’s most significant offshore oil fields and a critical contributor to India’s energy production. The SHP Platform forms an essential part of the field’s infrastructure, supporting exploration and production activities in the region. While the exact cause of the fire has not been disclosed, the incident highlights the importance of stringent safety measures on offshore installations.

Industrial safety experts note that offshore platforms are equipped with advanced firefighting systems and trained personnel, yet accidents remain a persistent risk due to the hazardous environment. ONGC emphasised that swift containment of the fire reflects the preparedness of its safety protocols and the efficiency of its emergency response teams.

The company further stated that updates would be provided as necessary and reiterated its commitment to ensuring workforce safety while maintaining an uninterrupted energy supply. The incident underscores the operational challenges of offshore oil and gas production, where even minor accidents can have significant safety and economic implications.
