A security scare unfolded in Malda on Saturday when an unidentified drone was spotted near the helicopter of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, forcing a temporary halt in her departure and raising serious concerns about airspace safety during election campaigning. The incident occurred shortly after she addressed a public rally in Maltipur and was preparing to leave for Gazole.
According to officials, the Chief Minister noticed unusual drone activity while boarding her helicopter and paused on the steps to closely monitor its movement. The sudden appearance of the drone in close proximity to the aircraft triggered immediate alertness among security personnel, given the strict protocols usually enforced during VVIP movements.
Expressing concern over the incident, Mamata Banerjee questioned the intent behind the drone’s presence and called for strict monitoring. “Who is behind this needs to be monitored. The police must identify them,” she said, hinting at a possible conspiracy. The incident comes at a time when political activity in the state has intensified ahead of the Assembly elections, with multiple rallies and roadshows being held across districts.
Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to identify the operator and determine the purpose of the drone. The incident has raised fresh questions about security arrangements during high-profile political movements, especially in sensitive election periods when ensuring safe and controlled airspace remains critical.
