AIMIM to contest 17 seats in West Bengal, releases first list of 12 candidates

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has announced its decision to contest 17 seats in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, marking a significant expansion of its political presence in the state. The party is entering the electoral battle in alliance with the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), led by former Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir. As part of its initial move, AIMIM has released its first list of 12 candidates, with the remaining five names expected to be announced shortly after internal consultations.

The party’s strategy is focused on constituencies with a significant minority population, aiming to consolidate its support base in these regions. Alongside candidate announcements, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has already begun campaigning in the state, addressing public meetings and rallying support for the party’s nominees. He is expected to continue his campaign with additional rallies in the coming days as the election momentum builds.

The constituencies included in the first list span across key districts, reflecting the party’s targeted approach. These include Raghunathganj, Asansol Uttar, Kandi, Sujapur, Mothabari, Nalhati, Morari, Barasat, Karandighi, Suti, Basirhat South, and Habra. The party leadership indicated that the remaining candidates will be finalised soon, ensuring full preparedness ahead of the polls.

Meanwhile, AIMIM has clarified that it will not field candidates in several other states holding elections simultaneously, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, and Assam. Instead, it has extended support to regional allies in these states, indicating a selective and strategic electoral approach focused on maximising influence in chosen regions.
