Bishwanath Debnath, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kasba Police Station, has been suspended, following allegations of administrative negligence. The decision came after a high-level scrutiny session where commission officials questioned Debnath regarding the law and order situation in his jurisdiction. The OC reportedly failed to provide satisfactory answers, leading to immediate disciplinary action ahead of the crucial polling phases in the city.
The primary point of contention involved the exclusion of a notorious local criminal, popularly known as "Sona Pappu," from the official list of history-sheeters or 'dagis'. Commission sources revealed that despite numerous serious allegations and a known criminal record, Sona Pappu’s name was missing from the preventive action list. When asked why no proactive measures were taken against such individuals to ensure a peaceful election environment, Debnath was unable to justify the lapse in record-keeping.
A few days ago, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) claimed that it had seized around ₹2 crore cash and around 300 pages of land deeds and an unlicensed gun from the Fern Road house of Biswajit Poddar alias Sona Pappu, the alleged mastermind behind a violent clash near Golpark.
