Elderly woman dies by suicide in Rishra amid SIR list anxiety, Trinamool candidate visits family

A 58-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide in the Barujibi area of Rishra gram panchayat after reportedly suffering mental distress linked to document discrepancies and concerns over her name not appearing in the SIR list. The incident occurred on Saturday night and has left the local community in shock.

Family members identified the deceased as Minti Sen. According to her son Bhola Sen, he returned home from work around 8:45 pm and found the door locked from inside. Despite repeated knocking, there was no response. With the help of neighbours, the door was eventually broken open, and the elderly woman was found hanging from the ceiling inside the house. Police from Rishra police station reached the spot soon after receiving the information. The body was recovered and sent for autopsy. Officers said the case is being treated as a suicide in the preliminary investigation, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report is received.

Family members claim that the woman had been under severe mental stress due to a mismatch in her documents. Her name appeared as “Minati Sen” in her Aadhaar card but as “Minu Sen” in her voter card, which allegedly resulted in her name not appearing on the SIR list. The family said the issue deeply disturbed her and worsened her existing mental health struggles. After the incident, Serampore Trinamool Congress candidate Tanmay Ghosh visited the bereaved family and expressed anger over the situation, stating that the issue would be brought to the attention of party supremo Mamata Banerjee.
