The voter list revision process in West Bengal has led to the deletion of more than 91 lakh names from the electoral rolls, according to fresh data released by the Election Commission of India late Monday night. The update follows the removal of an additional 2,676,916 names from the supplementary electoral roll, taking the total number of deletions during the Special Intensive Revision to 9,083,345.
Several border districts, including Cooch Behar, Uttar Dinajpur, Malda, Murshidabad, Nadia, and North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas recorded large numbers of deletions. Among them, Nadia district reported the highest percentage of removed names. With the latest revision, the state’s total voter count has declined to around 6.77 crore from 7.66 crore at the beginning of the process. Earlier, nearly 63 lakh names had already been struck off the rolls. When the Election Commission announced the poll schedule, it had estimated around 6.44 crore voters in the state, with roughly 60 lakh under scrutiny. Of these, around 27 lakh names have now been removed while approximately 32 lakh voters were verified and retained in the electoral list.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India said on Monday that nearly six million claims and objections related to the revision would be decided within the day. A bench led by Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, stressed the need for security during the process and warned of possible intervention if safety concerns persist. The court also directed the Calcutta High Court to form a three-member panel of former judges to standardise procedures for 19 appellate tribunals handling voter list disputes.
