A fatal road accident occurred early Tuesday morning on the Torsa Bridge in Hasimara, Alipurduar, when two lorries collided head-on. The collision caused one container lorry to break through the bridge railing and fall approximately 40 feet into the river below, resulting in the immediate death of the driver. Traffic on National Highway 31/C has been suspended as authorities respond to the incident and secure the site.
Eyewitnesses reported that the lorry coming from Bhutan collided with another heavy vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. Emergency services and Hasimara outpost police arrived promptly, rescuing both the driver and the helper from the fallen vehicle. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the helper sustained critical injuries and was taken to Hasimara Air Force Hospital for treatment. Both vehicles involved have been taken into police custody, and the driver and helper of the other lorry are being questioned.
Authorities are working to restore normal traffic flow on the Torsa Bridge while a detailed investigation into the cause of the collision is underway. Officials have confirmed that safety protocols are being followed, and efforts are being made to determine whether road conditions, vehicle speed, or driver error contributed to the accident. The incident has raised concerns over heavy vehicle safety on the bridge and surrounding areas.
