In a fresh instance of heightened election vigilance, ₹20 lakh in cash was seized from a four-wheeler during a naka checking operation in central Kolkata on April 7. The interception took place at around 12:30 pm at Chatawala Gali, where a static surveillance team (SST) was conducting routine vehicle checks as part of monitoring measures.
During inspection of the vehicle, officials discovered the cash being transported inside. The vehicle owner was identified as Basant Kumar Soni, a resident of Lake Town and Bidhannagar. Upon questioning, he informed authorities that the money was being carried from his residence to a bank. Following standard protocol, the Income Tax Department was alerted to the situation.
An Income Tax team led by Inspector Rajeev Ranjan reached the spot and conducted a formal enquiry. After preliminary verification, the entire amount was seized for further processing. The incident has been officially recorded based on a report submitted by the police team involved in the operation, and further action is being carried out in accordance with established procedures.
