TMC alleges “planned harassment, police bias” in Nandigram, Derek O’Brien writes to EC

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has alleged “planned police harassment” of its leaders and workers in Nandigram ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, escalating political tensions in the region. The party has formally approached the Election Commission, seeking urgent intervention and alleging misuse of law enforcement to target its cadre.

Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien wrote to the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, accusing Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari of influencing police actions. The complaint comes just days after Adhikari himself had raised concerns about surveillance during his campaign, highlighting a growing war of allegations between the two sides.

According to TMC, police activity in Nandigram Block-1 has increased significantly since April 5, with allegations of late-night raids at the homes of party workers without warrants. The party claimed that several leaders, including core committee members, have been forced to go into hiding due to fear of arrest, while family members—particularly women and the elderly—have allegedly faced intimidation during police visits.

The party has further alleged that these actions violate the Model Code of Conduct, which mandates neutrality of the administration during elections. It claimed that its workers are facing restrictions in movement and that their complaints are not being addressed, raising concerns over the fairness of the electoral process in the constituency.

In its submission, TMC has demanded an immediate investigation into the alleged actions, directions to halt any discriminatory policing, and strict action against officials found violating Election Commission guidelines. With polling in Nandigram scheduled for April 23, the party has urged swift intervention to ensure a free and fair election environment.
