BJP gherao 'New TMC' MLA Sandipan Saha's house in Entally, protest over 'cut money'
In a move aimed at easing financial pressure on the aviation sector, the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) has ordered a 25% reduction in landing and parking charges for domestic flights at major airports across the country. The decision, which takes effect immediately, will remain in place for three months and is intended to provide short-term relief to airlines facing rising operational costs.
Landing and parking charges are among the significant operational expenses for airlines after fuel and labour. By lowering these fees, regulators aim to ease cost pressures on carriers operating domestic routes. The measure comes at a time when airlines are dealing with higher fuel prices, airspace restrictions and disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions. The reduction will apply across 34 major airports regulated by AERA. The regulator used a special provision that allows tariff changes in public interest, even though airport charges are normally fixed for a five-year period. Officials indicated that any revenue loss faced by airport operators due to the cut may be addressed in future tariff reviews.
While the decision provides immediate financial relief to airlines, it does not automatically guarantee cheaper domestic airfares for passengers. Industry experts say ticket prices depend on several factors including fuel costs, demand levels and airline pricing strategies. AERA has clarified that the impact of the measure will be reviewed after three months based on market conditions and the financial health of the aviation industry.
